What a useful IoT pilot should prove

A connected device is only the beginning. A pilot should show that reliable data can lead to a useful operational action.

Choose an operational question

Start with a question such as whether an asset needs inspection or why a process was interrupted. Identify the person who needs the answer and the action they will take. This helps narrow the data needed and avoids collecting signals that do not contribute to the pilot’s purpose.

Test the difficult connection conditions

Agree sampling frequency, timestamps and device identity. Include weak networks, buffered readings, duplicate messages and reconnect behavior in the pilot. A dashboard should make missing or stale data visible so an operator can distinguish an equipment issue from a communication issue.

Connect an event to a person

Define alert thresholds with the team responsible for operation. Test how an alert is acknowledged, investigated and closed. Review noisy or repeated notifications and confirm that the system retains enough history to understand what happened.

Make expansion a deliberate decision

Before connecting more devices, review data quality, installation effort, monitoring responsibilities and operating costs. Document the onboarding procedure and site constraints. A successful pilot should provide evidence for a repeatable rollout, including the conditions that still need improvement.

Before you start

  1. One operational question and a responsible user

  2. Device identity, timestamps and reconnect scenarios

  3. An alert-to-action workflow

  4. Data quality and rollout acceptance criteria
